“…The Satanist isn’t just a metal album, it’s a ritual of the highest order; featuring a flurry of extremities that serve to offer adherence to the great dark one to whom he pledges his life. It’s also very personal, seeing as the album’s cover art comes from a painting in which his own blood was used. As noted, The Satanist is certainly a mid-paced sort of disc, something with few exercises in brutality, yet certain explosions when necessary. “Blow Your Trumpets Gabriel” features one of these explosions, yet others can be found throughout the disc and serve to add to the atmosphere; which is what The Satanist is all about. Slightly bombast, but featuring more elements of classic black metal and death metal; the album certainly sees the band at a sense of renewal, with the drumming just as calculatingly pummeling as it has always been, and the riff melodies just as grim and foreboding as we might expect them. There are no signs of these gentlemen tiptoeing through the tulips, proving that they still succeed in creating some of the most threatening and triumphant hymns that I’ve ever heard in my life…”
