Cryptospital – Dark Noise (2023)

Now here’s something you don’t hear everyday. Cryptospital essentially threw what several would consider to be two separate albums, one record of frantic, fuzz-laden black metal and another full of those dark atmospheres you might hear on a Dungeon Synth album. Not that the two haven’t been combined before, but I can’t recall a record where there’s one black metal cut and then another strict atmosphere piece, then another black metal cut, then another atmosphere and so on. It makes for good background music and seems to flow together well, however I know for a fact that people more interested in the black metal side or the atmosphere side of things are going to end up hitting the skip button more frequently than they want to. This results in several people, especially with the short attention spans of young metalheads today, getting frustrated fairly quickly with it. Let’s not even bring up the fact that these guys decided to shove a rather long atmosphere piece right to the end of the thing, which definitely had me skipping through a bit.

Dark Noise is a great experiment, but I’m not so sure that the method of making every other track an atmosphere was such a good idea. They could have just released two separate albums with this. That would have given people a choice.
