Savage – Glory Riders (2023)

I skipped a few to bring you this one, but I’ll be covering them at a later date. Anyway, we have got to talk about Germany’s Savage. If you check The Metal Archives (yes, it still exists) you’ll find that Savage has ten votes for WASP similarities and we mean early WASP. The frontman isn’t quite Blackie Lawless, but he definitely manages to bring that energy to the group and I’ll give him a pass. The riff melodies and production value comes straight out of the 1980’s and you’d swear this album was made forty years ago. Just think if WASP had stayed with the same style of their first three records and you’d have it. Maybe even a bit of The Headless Children, which is a simply incredible record from back to front.

In all honesty, it is a refreshing for an older head like me to see this kind of music making a comeback. I won’t riddle you with all the damn core I’ve been exposed to over the past few months, but just catching something that reminds me heavily of the classics, the real meat and potatoes of this genre is now worth it’s weight in gold. A lot of the kids can’t get into this music even though with streaming services and YouTube Music they have it right at their fingertips. They can’t grasp the power that traditional heavy metal had and why it still stands as legendary in the eyes of many bands and fans across the world. They don’t even have to buy the records anymore and they still won’t give it a fair shake, which concerns me that it’ll be lost and replaced by the deathcore plague we have today. Perhaps this is unnecessary paranoia though, especially with acts like Savage still holding up the torch for what is essentially the glory days of this genre. For those of you who remember what this genre of music used to be, you’ll absolutely love what these guys have done here. I’m definitely enjoying this ride into glory. There’s even a cut on here called “Master Bator” which is more than enough for me to recommend.
